Leopard mysql installation and configuration

To study JavaEE development on my new MacBook Pro, I installed mysql yesterday. While, I find chinese character can not be saved. So I spend some time to investigate the configuration of mysql on leopard and record as follows.
#1. download mysql here and install it directly
#2. download Navicat Premium here and install it
#3. cp /usr/local/mysql/support-files/my-large.cnf /etc/my.cnf
#4. sudo vi /etc/my.cnf
a) add default-character-set=utf8 under [client]
b) add default-character-set=utf8 and init_connect='SET NAMES utf8' under [mysqld]
c) add default-character-set=utf8 under [mysql]
#5. restart mysql - /Library/StartupItems/MySQLCOM/MySQLCOM restart
Notes: changes DID NOT take effect until I restarted the leopard.
#6. confirm - show variables like 'collation_%' and show variables like 'character_set_%'
Notes: every encoding related settings should be utf8 now.
